In honor of Black History Month, Birmingham born artist Sylvia Westbrook will join me as we share our art and celebrate the life of two African American women artists; Boston-born Lois Mailou Jones and Chicago based Marva Lee Pitchford-Jolly.

We will celebrate them with a “Meet the Artist" night in which we discuss their work. At our venue, Acorn Public Library(Oak Forest, IL), our work will also be on view. We will answer questions from the public.

I am thrilled!

I’m especially happy to be showing with Sylvia. The quintessential artist, Sylvia creates in oil, acrylic and pastel. Having seen her abstract acrylic paintingss - I know attendees are in for a real treat.

Though Sylvia studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, she says her talent is a “God given ability.”

Sylvia will talk about Lois Mailou Jones and I will discuss Marva Lee Pitchford-Jolly. In addition to talking about these artists, Sylvia and I will share our work which will include new pieces of art.

The show will go up during the month of February and the “Meet the Artist” night is scheduled for February 9th.

Original Art Goes to Print

Angel of Glory

I knew while creating this painting that it would be a message about praise to God.

The title came to me after Chicago-based artist Joyce Owens asked me if I had considered Fine Art America(fineartamerica.com) for prints of my “Angel.” This week, my “Angel” has been well “liked” on my Facebook page.

I decided then and there that I would offer prints. More in a minute.

21 Ideas Learned from Teaching Art

Who was your favorite teacher? A big part of what I do is teach others what I do. I achieve that through art classes. I currently teach at two locations - the Art House through the Oak Forest Park District and the Vogt Visual Art Center in Tinley Park, IL.

At first, I got into teaching for the money. Seriously. I wanted to make an additional income part-time. I knew I could teach others what I know about art.

Of course, over the eight years I’ve earned way more than money teaching. I’ve stayed involved with students because I stay fresh and current in my own work by teaching them. Lately, I’ve been wanting to take my teaching skills to a brand new level. The First Days of School by Harry and Rosemary Wong has become by "Bible."

With a little help from The First Days of School, here are the 21 things I'm learning from teaching:

Preparation = success. When I’m unprepared, it shows.
Each student will exceed my expectations.
Each student has the potential to be a great artist.
Some “slow learners” actually learn art differently.
The brightest and most promising artist in class might just be my autistic student.
Repeating and practicing a technique leads to mastery.
A stubborn artist who refuses to learn is soon given her wish.
Training the artists of tomorrow is an honor.
Learning art and teaching new techniques keeps my own art fresh.
There is more than one way to paint and more than one way to teach it.
When I’m on par, my students misbehave less.
All positive: I try and use all positive words in my art room.
Teachers are managers.
A computer can not replace an effective teacher.
I say Please and Thank you to my class.
I must consistently install routines and procedures.
Learning art is better than watching mindless reality TV.
In terms of materials, being unprepared does not work.
Being READY for my class leads to success.
I believe in collaboration, so I have lots of helpers/assistants in my art class.
I welcome each student with a smile.

From my days of playing teacher with my brothers and sisters, I knew one day I’d inspire others. I’m grateful I get the chance to do that with art.

Okay. So my daughter’s father gave her an amazing card for her birthday. The card said she was strong, ambitious and capable. I was like “Wow” that is what I think about her too.

This image on the card was so striking that I decided to play around with my own strong imagery.

I am following an amazing book - Flavor for Mixed Media by Mary Beth Shaw. I found myself playing around with acrylic, oil pastels, soft pastels, mediums and ink.

I was like “Oh Snap! I get to paint like this?”

After painting this piece, I lovingly handed it to my friends on Facebook who came up with some awesome titles.

I really appreciate it when I can collaborate with others on things like “titles.” The title I’m choosing is “Chasm of Unbelief.” I got chills when my good friend Leanna posted that.

I chose this title because in reality the red and black mid section of the piece represents all of the obstacles we must go through sometimes in order to come to belief or peace.

Fresh start...are you ready?

This week has been so amazing!! I made the decision a few weeks ago to take the limits off of where God can take me creatively in 2012.

So far, I've prayed to God daily for guidance. I'm listening. I've also began to draw and journal more. You can see one of my pencil drawings "Absolute Abandon" posted here.

Around this time of year, many folks are hopeful for a new year full of possibilities. I cleaned my art desk (at least it was clean) and I organized supplies in anticipation of the ideas that will flow.

Here are some cool books I'm reviewing:

T.D. Jakes' 64 Lessons for a Life Without Limits What I'm learning: It works when I work it. If I pray about making a children's book and never create work, nothing happens. I've learned that God is always with me, guiding me and directing me. He can't work unless I''m working too.

Lisa Sonora Beam's The Creative Entrepreneur What I'm learning: I can learn business ideas and express what's inside about my business using the visual language I already know. It has been totally empowering. I've been busy in my art journal - unearthing more joy than I've had in awhile.

I'm keeping up with the following blogs and people:

Pamela Casey - My accountability partner and fellow artist. Florida artist, Pamela Casey and I met in 2009 during an online class for artists. We met in person in 2010 and have been fast friends ever since. I value her calming spirit and way of motivating me. Her blog is a mix of life observations and photo-how-to.
Amos Johnson - Words can not express what he is to God inspired business owners -- Check out his free business resources.
Laura Young - When wordsmith and photographer Laura Young speaks, you never know what she'll say. She is a play-aunt to my oldest daughter and a friend to me. I am looking forward to hearing more from her this year.

One of my scriptures for this year is in the old testament of the Bible (Isaiah 43:18-19). It says, "Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.

Fresh start? You bet I'm ready for it.

Painting vs. Pain: Getting beyond the less than ideal

Today and in the next post, I show you the “secrets” to how my painting can help get beyond a less than ideal situation. My painting also goes through a less than pretty stage and I will share this too.

Knowing the story behind each piece and having rituals (things I do all of the time) are just a few “secrets” to getting beyond this.

What's this painting’s story?
My friend Diana’s Mom was having major surgery this summer. To encourage her Mom, I thought I’d go visit. I've always admired her funny and caring way. In the back of my mind, I thought maybe one day I would get the opportunity to paint her.

Yes. I see people and think “Wow wouldn’t it be nice to paint that spirit or that personality or that hair.

Anyway, at some point, I do visit again, taking my camera this time. I took pictures on the spot.

These photograph I took told a different story than the one I wanted to paint. The one we eventually used was a photograph from over 10 years ago. It told a different story of a more happier time - before illness. I knew I had to capture that happier time for Diana’s Mom and Dad.

With any client, I try and and stay cognizant of their story. Diana's Mom had always wanted a portrait she said. Now seemed like the perfect time.

When Diana eventually saw the painting --about halfway through, she said, “He is so absolutely perfect. I cried...” I was so elated to hear this because this portrait did not start off "pretty." In fact, this is where it started:

New Painting is Accepted: “Genesis of Survival”

Do you know a more inspired, more encouraged, more joyful artist from the "west side" than me? Today I'm even more pumped!

Acceptance!

Yesterday, I got an acceptance letter for my painting “Genesis of Survival” to the show "Testimony to Being" at Swedish Covenant Hospital in Chicago, Illinois.

I’m really excited about this acceptance as it is the first time I’ve entered something this personal into a show and it was accepted. “Genesis of Survival” is one of my favorite paintings because I love the detail work done with a palette knife. It's like painting with a flexible butter knife.

The exhibit will be on view from October 15, 2011 through November 5, 2011 at Swedish Covenant Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. I’ll share more details as the date draws nearer.

Update on Last Post

In my last post, "Lil Wayne: 7 Success Tips for Artists - I mentioned that after watching video tidbits about Lil Wayne with my daughter, I was inspired as an artist. I invited you to stay tuned as I designed a fresh approach to my studio practice.

Here is an update on where I'm at. So far this September, I've:

--approached two business expos to share my work
--approached a retail boutique about having my work there
--accepted two commissions for work
--had a portfolio review via the Chicago Artist Coalition Portfolio Perfect Boot Camp

Lil Wayne: 7 Success Tips for Artists

Last night, I watched something I thought I’d never watch; over an hour of biographical video footage about grammy award winning American rapper Lil Wayne. I watched the VH1 Behind the Music video, his interview with American journalist Katie Couric and some other footage with my teen daughter, Kayla.

Kayla told me she had already watched his VH1 interview with her father. Since they had a bonding moment over it, I figured I’d watch it with her as well. Reason aside - let’s just say I was fascinated by the footage. My daughter got a real kick out of seeing my reaction.

Lil Wayne in one word: industrious. He is hardworking. On one of the videos, he is shown performing a full show and then getting on his tour bus to record new material. It’s like he was driven to succeed.

I was fascinated by the interviews. Couric asked about the rumors of his alleged addiction to cough syrup and use of marijuana. He was real about that. That was interesting to me--since I often allow food to get in my way. I mean I can eat. Food addiction means I’d rather eat pecan sandies cookies for breakfast than cook a real meal. Intimate knowledge of my own struggles enabled me to understand this portion of the video.

After watching this, I now better understand why Kayla was “super gaga” over the Lil Wayne phenomena. From watching these videos with her, I gleaned 7 success tips for ANY artist:

7 Success Tips for Artists

Work hard: one needs the will to work hard; Lil Wayne tells Katie Couric he has this
Find mentors: one of the videos stated that Lil’ Wayne was mentored since age 9
Get involved:Lil Wayne did odd jobs at his old record label before he ever recorded
Be real and know one’s identity: it was obvious to me that he knows where he is from AND an even stronger sense of where he is going
Practice ones skill: In the Bible, one of my favorite sayings from King Solomon says “skill will bring success.” Lil Wayne embodied this as a youngster and with the old rap group, “Hot Boyz.” After the group disbanded, he was ready to do his thing.
Work with a team: It might have been my perspective, but it seemed as if real commercial success came after Li Wayne’s second album was a commercial thud. He then chose a fresh team of producers and music folks to create with.
Be prepared to reinvent: Also after the second album, Lil Wayne said he reinvented his method of recording. In previous recordings, he had pre-written his lyrics. After a reinvention, he says he began recording his music without using a pad of paper. Whether this was totally “freestyle,” is debatable. But his new way was different from the way he recorded before.

After watching these video tidbits about Lil Wayne, and gleaning these tips, I realize there is hard work to be done. As an artist, I’ve spent more time “marketing” than painting. I need tough love here. And a renewed, fresh approach to my studio practice. Watching Lil Wayne with my daughter has caused me to want to live to my creative potential. Stay tuned.

Making the Best of It...

The only thing missing from my meeting with Jackie Taylor...was Jackie Taylor.

I had high hopes to meet the theatrical history maker from Chicago. My friend Kuki had suggested I seek to speak with her several weeks ago. Kuki thought Ms. Taylor would be excited about my creative work and that I could learn from her.

To prepare for my meeting with Ms. Taylor, I researched to find out her background. I utilized the HistoryMakers.com - a biographical information and audio and video clips about African Americans who have influenced history. I literally cried as I found out that Ms. Taylor and I have these things in common:

We both attended Loyola University
We both juggled marriage and motherhood as a Loyola student
We both have had great mentors and teachers along the way

So after confirming our appointment the day before we were to meet, I was so excited. The Black Ensemble Theatre headquarters is on the north side of Chicago. I knew I had to take my six year old to her sitter who would watch her as I drove across town to reach Ms. Taylor.

I walked in with my bag and my portfolio. Upon my arrival, I was told that Ms. Taylor was unavailable. Her previous meeting had run over. Oooh! Crushed. Surprised. Disappointed.

I would instead meet with Gwyn Sea, her assistant of 9 years.

As John Wooden, the famed college basketball coach said: "Things turn out best for the people who make the best of the way things turn out."

So with Ms. Sea so graciously standing in, I asked my questions--some of which I got from my Facebook friends and fans:

How did Ms. Taylor juggle her craft, motherhood and marriage?
How has Ms. Taylor dealt with failure?
What did her parents and mentors do to instill leadership qualities in her when she was a child - how does one make a history maker?

I learned that:

Ms. Taylor did whatever she could to put her craft first. She does not use the word “failure.” It’s all feedback for the next growth opportunity.
As for children--Ms. Sea says that as a teacher herself, Ms. Taylor would seek out the child’s strong points and build them up. One must emphasize the strength and offer encouragement with the weakness. Offer plenty of lessons and opportunities to grow that strength.
Ms. Sea said that Ms. Taylor’s philosophy is there are “no bad children.”

After meeting Gwen Sea, I was greatly impressed by Ms. Taylor and the Black Ensemble Theatre. I hope to one day meet Ms. Taylor in person. For today, I am blessed to know of her. She is a history maker and someone to admire.

My Crazy Whoa! Summer

Let me say that it's been a minute since my last post...so I'm super glad to have you here reading this. Thank you for joining me here.

From the beginning of the summer until about three weeks ago, I was on a magical ride. I partnered with the Oak Forest Park District to start an art program called the “Art House” in Oak Forest, IL for young artists. Our focus was learning art techniques while doing work in the community. You can see a video and read an article about the Art House via the Oak Forest Patch.

Half-way through the summer, I took on another program in Tinley Park, IL--teaching young people via the Tinley Park Park District Summer Art Camp. We taught 4 weeks of non-stop action packed classes. And we had an art show at the end of each week for parents and students.

Well, the summer was Crazy Whoa! - borrowing a term from my teenage daughter. We face painted at the Relay for Life(American Cancer Society). We participated in the community kite fly in Oak Forest as well as the Oak Fest--a fun fair for families.

Looking back, I'm like Wow! - I learned 3 things from my experience at the Art House and the Tinley Park Summer Art Camp:

Young people have a lot to offer the world with their artistry and are genuinely interested in the world.
Many of my students needed a tiny bit of encouragement and once they got it--they were off running and creating.
Flexibility was a must. I learned to be absolutely adaptable in my plans. One of my students, Maddie made sure I never got too stiff. Thanks Maddie!

With our last art show, my students decided to raise money to supply a huge dog bone for Orry, the Oak Forest K-9. By selling their art, they raised not only that amount, but also enough for one month supply of food. I was blown away by their generosity.

After teaching this summer, the magical ride concluded. Last week, I realized that I had not painted in a month. NO PAINTINGS=NO EXPRESSION + NO EXPOSURE. I'd been teaching young people art for several months. Though I loved that part of my life too, much of my creativity went to the kids as I teach. I knew it was time to get back in the studio.

So last week, I started painting little landscapes near where I live. Then we went for a little getaway this weekend. And I painted three more little landscape paintings near the Fox River in Ottawa and Norway, IL. It was like me and God time. After not painting for a while, it’s like He whispered to me--”Just Do It.”

So what’s next? More teaching in the fall via the Art House in Oak Forest. And more painting. Definitely more painting.

"After the Storm"

Do you remember learning to ride a bike?

Recently, my youngest daughter, Imani, could not stop falling as she learned to ride her new bike. Unsure of how to steer the bike, she kept riding and falling. The only thing I could teach her to do is to get back up right away.

After watching Imani fall and get back up, I reflected on some life challenges of my own.

The result was this painting, “After the Storm.” It is a mixed media piece--which means it was created with multiple kinds of media or materials.

I chose strong colors red, umber and orange simply because I absolutely loved them. They represent power and strength to me. I tore paper and added them to the piece - not due to a plan, but due to my desire to explore collage with jagged edges. And the hearts that are in this piece are my way of representing friendship and intimacy.

Regardless of how many times I’ve fallen, I’ve managed to get back up with the help of God’s power and my family and friends.

In the bible, Psalm 145:14 says, "The LORD upholds all who fall and lifts up all who are bowed down."

May my new creation remind you of this.

If You Don't Stand for Something...

Since my last post, I’ve grappled and considered something major for me and I wanted to share it with you. If you’ve ever taken a stand for your values...or wanted to, this is for you.

Last week, I realized a dream I've had for almost 15 years. I've wanted to get accepted into graduate school. But, I almost damaged my marriage, almost went deeper in debt and almost shunned my values to achieve it.

Almost.

Last week, I was accepted into an MFA (Master of Fine Arts) program. I was on another conference call when the call came in. I was so excited, I told everybody in my little world. Besides sharing it with my family, I screamed it from my “front porch” on Facebook, Linkedin and Twitter.

The day after I received acceptance, I received my financial aid award letter which included $10,000 in subsidized and unsubsidized loans. Without seeking advice, I hurriedly signed my online promissory note. I did not talk with my husband and he did not know before then that I was agreeing to go deeper in debt.

Not only did I make this hurried financial decision, I almost rejected my values to reach for the opportunity. I received a draft of my residency plan (the document showing what kinds of questions we’d be talking about this semester) from the school. It included learning about and watching performances about role play, fluid identities and gender identity issues. Some of the visiting artists/faculty performances that spoke to gender identity issues were not part of my value system.

I am a Christ follower. An imperfect person trying to follow Him who is perfect.

I was very much torn. I wanted to focus on the opportunity and not see a conflict with my values. After a good talk with Beth, an awesome life coach, I write out pros and cons of attending the school. I then sought counsel from a dear friend who helped me see that the anger/hurt/loss I felt was OK.

After thoughtful consideration, I decided to decline acceptance to the school.

I thank all of the folks who wrote letters of recommendation for me. I also thank all of my friends who sent me kudos and congratulations. It all meant a lot to me.

What’s next? I’m not sure. I surrender to God and realize I need help with the next step(s).

What do I know for sure? His next step is better than my next step.

Be Willing to Start

I'm starting 2011 with a bunch of written goals. Since my girls went back to school, I've been spending my mornings reading, thinking and writing.

I'm starting this year journey without seeing the whole path. After my birthday, Christmas Eve, I had the urge to start anew. To begin again. Hence, my word for this year is reinvention.

I made another vision board which is pictured here. I admit, I don’t have a clear path.
But, I’m willing to start.

to lead.
to see.
to voice.
to dance.
and make waves
with my art and with my life.

In his January 12th eulogy at the Tucson Memorial for the Tucson, Arizona shooting victims, President Obama said, “We should do everything we can do to make sure this country lives up to its children’s expectations.”

Chaos. Domestic uncertainty. Poverty. Violence. That’s what many youth have come to expect. On another twist, my 17 year old told me she expects nothing. She doesn’t really know what to expect except Jesus’ return and death.

Should any of us just sit around waiting for death?

Just before my birthday Christmas Eve, my brother-in-law lost his mother, due to an unexpected illness. As I joined my family and others in serving the repast dinner after the funeral, a thought occurred to me. I thought I had never seen such love and togetherness as I’d seen that day.

I don’t want to have another death occur to experience that love and unity again.

Scripture tells us, “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”
My days are numbered. In the end, I hope I will be found:

trusting.
serving.
loving.
creating.

With my brush, pen, palette, pencil and camera in hand I am willing to start. Though I can’t see the whole 2011 path, I am willing to start.

Taking Care of What Santa Brought (Your Original Oil Painting)

Santa did good. Your new original oil painting arrived in time for Christmas. It was created on quality, fine-art canvas. Your painting should last for generations with it's original craftsmanship. To assure this, reasonable care should be taken to protect it as you would any article of value. Here are my 5 Top Care Recommendations:

1. Protect your oil painting.
Protect your painting from environmental damage like smoke and air pollution. You may have seen before and after images of oil paintings that have been cleaned. Eliminate any smoking near your oil painting, and limit the use of candles and incense near it. You may prefer to hang it outside of direct sunlight and ultra-violet exposure.

2. Dusting is OK.
Dust your painting regularly. Do not spray anything (like Pledge) on the work. A soft brush, like a paintbrush, may be used to dust paintings. You can also dust with a soft, dry cloth. Additionally, you can keep artwork dust free by using a low power vacuum with a hose and brush attached.

3. Take care when transporting.
When transporting your painting, lay a flat piece of cardboard, mat board or similar firm material over the front and back surfaces. For extra protection, wrap it in bubble wrap or styrofoam wrap. Try not to keep it wrapped up for too long because might cause damaging moisture buildup. Fedex Office carries a medium and large box especially made for shipping/ transporting art.

4. Beware of sharp objects.
Never lean the front or back of a stretched canvas on a pointed or sharp object, no matter how small. This will leave a dent that will mar your work. If you want to lean it against something, lean it on the wood of its stretcher bars so that nothing presses against the actual canvas.

5. Properly frame your oil painting.
Be sure your oil painting is properly framed. Oil paintings must be framed without glass. The framing serves to accent and complete the painting and cover the edges of the canvas. You might need a frame with a large rabbet depth to accommodate large canvas stretchers. I recommend the online store-- pictureframes.com for their excellent selection and customer service.

Finally, if the work must change owners, the artist who created the work would probably appreciate being contacted. She would love knowing of the painting’s whereabouts so she can update the work's provenance records.

Dance! (Like an Artist)

We were all dancing to music from the 90’s. My husband and my girls and I. This was music at least two of us were familiar with. Whatever we did, my littlest one would mimic us.

We were dancing and laughing hysterically. The scene made me think how much music has helped me lately.

Music has helped me during my long hours at the painting easel. I have been completing a year-long project for the Markham Public Library(IL) which includes several paintings.

Music from 80‘s R&B singer Chaka Khan, legends The Isley Brothers and contemporary Gospel musicians like The Winans and J. Moss--have me literally dancing at the easel and cause my paint to flow just right. With music like this, my mistakes in my paintings(I do make many) don't seem as gargantuan.

For example, in my haste to finish my painting, I realized after doing the drawing (shown on this post) that I had no guys represented. I had no models either. Oops!

I quickly added some figures into the painting as placeholders.

Luckily, I was using oil for this piece and could easily add figures like this. I have posted how it looked here. I quickly called some dear friends who modeled for me that night and I was able to add in the figures.

With a little help from iTunes -my music player on my computer--and a few extra painting hours, the piece was done.

Music is an essential addition to my painting routine.    Put the music on and start the day is my advice.

21 Days of Gratitude

Publisher of Success Magazine, Darren Hardy, recently gave readers a challenge in a blog post on gratitude:

He writes:

"My challenge to you is to think of an area of your life you are having difficulty in and want to improve. For the next 21 days, take three minutes at the end of the day and write down what about that problematic situation you appreciate, what’s good and what you’re grateful for."

I have chosen the area of my marriage relationship to focus on with gratitude. We’ve gone to marriage communication seminars and we attend a marriage small group at our church. So we are growing at it.

Yet, I did not realize that there is so much to be thankful for. After thinking about him, I realize that as an artist, my husband is my biggest fan. I'm so grateful to God for him because:

*he reminds me to get adequate rest after long painting sessions
*he reads to my little one every day and puts her to bed at night(I can paint during this time)
*he supports me while I build my business(he won’t let it be a non-for-profit either)
*with him, I can just be

In about 22 days, we’ll celebrate our ninth year anniversary. Our marriage is by no means perfect, but I know his support makes me a better person, a better mom and a better artist.

Okay. Before you, my reader, I'm committing to the 21 day challenge. For 21 days I’m going to take 3 minutes a day to journal what I’m grateful for about him. I’ve already scheduled reminders in my online calendar.

Art and Death: How One Artist Responds

What is it like to do a portrait of a dying man? Do you see him as dying? I’d like to respond to a comment left on a recent blog post. I recently painted my friend Laura’s Dad not knowing he was THAT close. It’s the not knowing that I want to discuss with you.

Didn’t I see his frailty?   Not exactly.

I looked for beauty
I went in with high expectations and because I had no frame of reference--I expected beauty. He was surrounded by decor that included African masks, a giraffe statue and a painting or two that he had collected over the years. Greenery was everywhere and his home included a garden and water out back.

There was light everywhere coming from the big windows and door to the back porch. The light was hitting the fluffs of his white hair in such a way--they begged to be painted. His hunter green polo sweat shirt somewhat matched the greenery I saw all around. Finally, there was an eclectic mix of tunes coming from his CD player.

All of this put me in the painting mood.

I focused on my craft
When I set up my pastels on the table, I anticipated a good painting session. I grabbed several colors -- some greens, burnt sienna, orange and lavender were among them. He was very patient with me and even picked up a book to “read” at my request.

And I started to create what I saw.

I looked for the light and tried to express that in his skin tone. I was in love with the pigments and seeing how I could use them to say what was before me. I let the pastel sticks do the talking.

I modified my marks
Hence, I was never conscious of anything. I modified my marks, not because I knew anything but because I was creating and did not know how much to show. Do I show that crevice with a darker blue or a softer pale orange. Do I render the thin cheek bones quite that thin? His slight nose. I went over certain parts over and over.   The pastels were lovely for this.

It felt so good capturing his essence. That he would pass away almost a month later was a shock to me. My friend(Laura) talks extensively about this experience in her blog--No Safe Distance.

In hindsight, I saw the wrinkles --his large hands. I noticed that he was quiet. But in this beautiful moment, I noticed what my eyes told me. And responded with artistry. I did not realize that Laura’s Dad was fading. That may just be a good thing.

7 Ideas to Stay Balanced

My creative life is so (I’m going to use the B word) - busy, but I’ve gathered 7 ideas that might help keep me balanced. The trick is to use them. I know you’re active too, so maybe we can talk about this. I just finished my first podcast for my blog, so feel free to listen to the 4-minute audio version here.

I really appreciate all the great feedback I’ve already gotten from folks about the topic of balancing. Hence, I’m doubly determined to balance my art career and motherhood.

Prime example. This week, I took a trip to the art supply store with my little one, Imani--who is also creative. Wanting to help me, she decided to place every colorful thing in our cart. EVERY colorful thing.

I spent the next 30 minutes grabbing paint, paint mediums, oil paint sticks and other stuff she wanted to put in the cart. The only thing that stopped it all was my consent to purchase a wooden ready-to-paint car.

I eventually ended our shopping trip with new canvas, brushes, that wooden car and my child in hand. I was able to do a quick figure study in watercolor(pictured) after she fell asleep. I spent time with my husband talking about the election while painting him(I've included that sketch in this post).

Since this scene may be typical for some other readers, here are my 7 ideas:

Pray. I believe that one needs divine inspiration to manage it all.
Allow children to join you on the journey--show them what you’re doing. They’ll love it.
Grab a buddy--a good girlfriend, spouse, etc, will help keep you sane and accountable. My art buddy Pamela Casey http://artisticimagesbypc.com/ helps keep me sane during our weekly talks.
Get use to some loss of sleep--my day begins before they awake and I also stay up after they are sleep.
Commit to your creativity--it helps to say, “I am (an artist, writer, sculptor, etc. )” to all you meet.” In his book The Power of Positive Thinking, Dr. Norman Vincent Peale said, “Throw your heart over the wall, and your body will follow.” Once you say it, that’s throwing your head over that wall.
Get use to the edge--your creative breakthrough lies on the other side of your comfort zone.
Say No--get use to saying it A LOT.

Who Else is Scared this Halloween?

Yes, Halloween is here. And though this is a fun time for some filled with pumpkins, ghosts and scary movies, there is nothing more fear-inducing than being a mommy...and an artist. Maybe you can relate.

Take this week, for example.

What could I do when my little one Imani wanted to put on her costume--just to "practice?" You know me. The mom and artist in me said “OK” and grabbed my camera. As she twirled around and around, I think she thought she’d BECOME a butterfly.

The next day, my big teen Kayla begged me for help with her Halloween homework for Spanish. She had to create a full length cardboard skeleton with her very own attributes. She had already made an amazing outfit by hand out of scraps of cloth I had. She just needed the hair done. So there I was - at 11pm sewing weave(hair extensions) on her Día de los Muertos skeleton. I’m thinking, “First of all, I don't know how to sew weave and secondly, “Isn't this YOUR project?” Thankfully, we finished it and she was happy with it.

Mommy's work, like artists’ work means hearing and noticing.

This is what I heard this week:

“Mommy can you help me find my doll’s sippy cup?”
“Mommy come and see my transformer - no come and see!(she was holding playdoh and a broken handle from a drawer)”
“Mommy, guess what Nicholas is for Halloween. No Guess!”

And this is what I noticed:

My daughters are as creative as I am and are actually more fearless than I.
When I hear the word “Mommy” when I’m concentrating on writing or painting, I get edgy.
Actually making art is pretty challenging with my current lifestyle.

It’s that last one that is kicking my behind right now.

With costume prep, taking Kayla back and forth for her skit(she is directing a skit at church--just in time for Halloween), prepping the car for the Trunk or Treat and the school Halloween party--it’s amazing that I put paintbrush to palette at all.

In a recent interview with Darren Hardy of Success Magazine, Paula Deen shares that when she first started out by herself, she sacrificed her relationship with her boys. I heard that and froze. That scared me.

All too often, Imani says, "Mommy, play with me," and sadly my response is “Hold on, just one more minute” as I type or paint.

Have you ever had to say that? Are you developing something BIG and yet have to re-prioritize and perhaps even(gulp) sacrifice what’s actually precious to bring the BIG it into existence?

Yes, Halloween is here. But there is nothing that scares me more right now than being a mommy...and an artist.

My Ideal Reader

With a commitment to building a more vibrant blog, I signed up for the 4-week Blog Triage class with Cynthia Morris and Alyson Stanfield. Today’s assignment is to describe the people I want to visit and read my blog. My hope is that by envisioning my Ideal Reader I will get focused and get at the heart of what I want to post about.

Though I had to imagine my Ideal Reader, I’m grateful to my family members, friends and fellow artists who have kept up with me through my blog. I appreciate you.

So here is the assignment. Using the following questions:

Are they of a certain age or background?
Do they live in a particular region?
What are their interests – including, but not limited to art?
Are they comfortable with the blog format?
Are they likely to comment?

I imagine that my Ideal Reader:

...is ageless - he/she knows age is just a number. He may even be like my buddy Gabe who is the father of teen girls which keep him youthful. My reader might have a rags to riches story in the making - a Paula Deen before she was Paula Deen. Because of this, my ideal reader exudes light and is a faith-filled person.

Cassandra. Yep. I even “named” my Ideal Reader.

Cassandra might live outside of the big city, but close enough to know where the fun city spots are. She has made definite choices as to where she worships and where her kids go to school. She is creative herself--whether singing, writing or creating a life for her family and community. Therefore, Cassandra is a lover of color and things that are in harmony. She is a traveler, with a ready passport, often enjoying the smaller haunts to the touristy traps.

She is technology saavy and is comfortable with a blog. My Ideal Reader is not only likely to comment, but will ask questions AND comment in an engaging way. This shows she really supports me.

Did I mention that my Ideal Reader is likely to comment? (smile)

You Can Build It At Your Table

Yes, tables are made for eating, playing games and other familial events. But, did you know that inspiration and dreams can be built --at the table? After spending lots of time lately at my table painting, I began wondering what other transformers--folks making a thorough or dramatic change in themselves and the world - do at their tables. What are you building at your table?

I believe many good things can come from time spent "at the table." Artists have birthed new careers, adventures have been written and families have been nurtured at the family table. Over the next few posts, I'd like to talk to artists and other creatives about "table time."

You can use your table to:

1. Build a business. Sandra Magsamen, artist, art therapist and author, built her business over 20 years ago in her basement. I recently found out about her and she is now my poster child for artistic success. While working a FT job, she and her husband's shipping and receiving area was their dining room. Sandra told her story to Marcia Brixey, founder of Money Wise Women Educational Services in a recent teleseminar. Many entrepreneurs, like Sandra have built sustaining businesses at their tables.

2. Nurture a child. This week we carved our pumpkin to my five year olds delight. She watched my every move and asked lots of questions. This "table time" was precious and reminded me of other memorable times. I remember my grandmother being a great cook. She often fixed awesome meals--though I was too young to really appreciate dishes like jambalaya and squash pie. My cousin and my brothers and sisters just knew that when we returned home from school, shortly thereafter we'd sit at grandma's dining room table (next to the piano) and eat whatever she fixed.

I learned a lot at my grandmother's table. I will share more about this soon.

Meals at the table are fantastic. Selling insurance and financial products at the table can be good too I guess. Time spent "at the table" can make the difference between something so-so and something truly inspiring being built.

Eeeeck! I'm Almost Speechless!

I'm so excited. Words can not express how I feel right now. I will try though. Eeeeek! Wow! Yes! (see) The words come out like that. I'm excited because the show is hung at Chicago's Flourish Studios's Envision Gallery. It took a lot to get here.

A mere few weeks ago, I was floundering with this new direction for my personal artwork. Painting was flourishing in my commission work, but nothing was coming forth in my personal work. I knew I wanted to talk about healing from fragmented relationships--healing from brokenness. But it would not come out like I wanted to. I was surrounded by prayer, paint jars, glue muslin, wood panels, and etc. All the stuff I'd use to make my pieces. Enter my success team.

I joined a success team lead by Eileen Kerlin Walsh. (Look out world--here comes Eileen!) My success team encouraged me and one of them literally said "Create two panels this week." I was like, "Okay." After doing this for a time--my goal was in sight.

In Teamworks, author Barbara Sher says, "A Success Team will keep you going, steadily, step by step, week after week...until one day...you arrive right in the middle of your goal." That's what my team did for me. Further, when I hit a snag with my frames, one of my team mates personally made them according to my specifications.

So...you see words cannot express how I'm feeling. My hope is that whatever you're working on these days will have you so excited --you too will be (almost) speechless!

I have not posted in a while and I'm coming clean. I've been super self-conscious and not sure what to do next with my blog. I could not complete my "Father's Day" project and I'm sorry to all who submitted photos. Due to a paid commission and a summer job, I could not paint anything additional.

So now, with my own permission, I'm moving on and will get over my shame. I've learned:

1) Overwhelming myself is no longer an option.
2) The truth feels so good.
3) TBP: Think before posting.

Author Emily Kimbrough said, "Remember, we all stumble, every one of us. That's why it's a comfort to go hand in hand. I talked to my associate, UK artist Kirsty Hall, who encouraged me to post today. I'm so glad I talked to her.

For the record, I love connecting with folks here and will continue to do so.

9 Father's Day Portraits - My Tribute to Real Men

Hello everyone. It’s a few days until Father’s Day and I’d like to celebrate with a new painting project; Real Men. Today, as I launch my portrait project, I start with my friend Laura’s dad who sat for me not too long ago. People are a subject I love.

I am very excited about this project and hope my viewers will enjoy seeing a new “Real Man” every day for the next two weeks. First, I need a few interesting PAINTABLE photos of dads for the project.

Please review the photo requirements:

The photo you send should be from the shoulders up. The photo should be taken by YOU, not a professional photographer. The best photos for portraits have strong light and shadow. If you take a flash photo of your dad with him looking directly in the camera - this will yield a flat image that is not as interesting to paint.

Please state your dad’s eye color, e.g., hazel, gray-green, dark blue, dark brown, etc. It's hard to see color in many photos.

Email your photo to me - toni@toniruppert.com. Go ahead, send them to me. If you’d like, you can also send me 2-3 sentences about why your dad is special and is in fact a real man. In the next few days, I will start posting the person of the day and your special tribute to him.

NOTE: By sending me a photo, you are giving me permission to paint the portrait and publish the completed painting along with the photo, on my blog, website and on Facebook.

I cannot tell you when your painting will be posted because I have my daughter, Kayla, randomly pick a photo for me to paint every day.

Each portrait size will be 11x14 inches in oil or mixed media, and be available for sale for $65 plus $10 shipping/handling in the US, $20 international. If you wish to purchase a portrait, simply e-mail me at toni@toniruppert.com and I can send the Paypal link.

WHEN: I will start collecting photos immediately and continue doing so during the duration of the project. I will choose which portraits I wish to paint, so sending me a photo does not GUARANTEE that it will be painted as a part of the project.

"It's In Between Us", Mixed Media, 18x24

My dining room table, my current spot for creating, is in a state of disarray right now. But I feel a cleansing coming on--an inner cleansing. Do you know what I mean? More and more, I am feeling the freedom that comes through expression. So I don’t mind the mess.

In about four months from today, my artwork will be shown at Flourish Studios’ Envision Gallery in Chicago. I’m thrilled to be sharing my personal story and that of other women with works of art that speak to domestic issues. Flourish Studios was founded by Dr. Julia Rahn and the curator is Meredith Siemsen. After meeting them both recently, I was truly inspired to keep creating and, well flourishing.

The show opens October 1st, 2010 with a reception - just in time for Domestic Violence Awareness Month and Chicago Artists Month. I will be available for a short gallery talk to discuss my processes and techniques. The gallery is located at 3020 N. Lincoln Ave in Chicago.

In addition, the show, “Healing from Brokenness” will be a fundraiser for IMPACT Chicago - a non-profit organization that is committed to ending violence against women.

I have posted my newest piece which has been tentatively named “It's In Between Us.” It is 18x24 and is a Mixed Media piece(pastel, torn paper, rice, photography and finger prints). I will be asking my fans on Facebook for their thoughts on my title.

I so appreciate this opportunity to share some deeper work about an issue that impacts us all. The "controlled chaos" on my table means that art is happening.

Grateful and Amazed...

I must share this with you. I got a call on my way to a meeting. I let it go into voice-mail because I did not recognize the number and it was after hours. Then I rethought my action and called back. The lady who answered said something and I could not understand - it was not obvious where I had called. She spoke with an accent. I told her who I was. She said, do you know _____? I’m like I don’t understand. I had her repeat the person's name 2 more times. Then she asked me to confirm that I am Toni Ruppert Fine Art & Design. That got my attention.

She said she was calling from a currency exchange at ______ in Chicago, IL and someone was trying to cash a check for $600 they said I mailed them. I was like “No, No, I do not know them.” She put me on hold for a long time.

When she got back on, she told me, this guy ______ tried to cash a check. But they would not process it. My heart thundered. I thanked her profusely and hung up.

I then got a call from my friend Maria - I said please pray for me. I told her quickly what happened. Then I called my bank.

I went ahead and closed the account after some discussion. My account had been compromised. After getting off of the phone, I was like Thank You Lord. Praise You Jesus. Hallelujah! I was in tears. I got to my meeting and then returned home again. I was exhausted.

But before going to bed, I wanted to grab something to remember this event and God’s protection. I grabbed our cookie jar and placed it on the table.

When you open it, my cookie jar says,”Get your hand out of my cookie jar- roar!” It sounds real menacing. It was perfect to remind me of how God is my powerful lion, my protector. I am so grateful that people did their job and called me. I‘m so grateful that wasn't ripped off.

I decided to post some good news along with some principles that have helped me win. I want to inspire you to continue to win too. I belong to an art group on Facebook. We artists want to be the best at what we do and have posted good news for the group to see. It has been inspiring to read what artists are doing all over the world. I decided to post my good news for you. Allow me to inspire you.

I am most grateful to share that in January I...  

--- unveiled 3 new paintings (see video link below)
 --- learned new digital imaging techniques
 --- began study of the GMAT exam for design/business school 
--- contacted 7 new potential clients from a referral 
--- developed new painting project for a state grant
 --- started dancing and reading scripture to jumpstart my day
 --- started piano lessons(something I’ve wanted since I was 11)

I will now share my winning principles. I have found that these truths have helped me win again and again.

Principle #1 - Be open to opportunity
The unveiling of 3 new paintings happened because last spring Allen Jongsma and Pastor Dave of Living Springs Community Church contacted me and subsequently met with me to discuss their ideas for new artwork. This was my biggest endeavor at that time and boy was I nervous. But I felt good vibes after several meetings and wholeheartedly embraced the work. Melanie Jongsma, a gifted writer and Allen’s daughter, sent this video of the unveiling to me. It is linked below. This all happened because I was open to opportunity.

Principle #2 -- Reach out for help
I’ve wanted to attend IIT School of Design for a long time. Last year I decided to seek to combine this desire with a business degree from the IIT Stuart School of Business. IIT has a dual degree program. Besides gaining admission, there is one other thing that stands in my way - the GMAT exam. In January, I reached out for help. After my inquiry, Mr. Krishna Erramilli of the Stuart School of Business, took time and talked to me about the program and a strategy to gain admittance including taking the dreaded GMAT exam. I am most grateful for his time. In addition, my brothers Robert and Edwin have helped me tremendously with my math skills. I am studying now and plan to take my GMAT test in April.

(Update-GMAT was not taken, but opportunity is still knocking. I'm letting it in. I'm having a good time focusing on being great at who I am right now; wife, mommy and artist.)

Family; Not Easily Broken

With a strong foundation, a family can survive and thrive even in a tough year. According to scripture,”Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken (Ecclesiastes 4:12).

The painting in this post is called “A Cord of Three Strands.” It is a portrait of a couple -kind of like my husband and I - who hold onto God and hold onto each other. Can you see the cross in the picture?

This watercolor painting, about 30x30, was created from an idea I had a number of years ago. I made a little 6x6 painting of it at the time. This new larger painting takes the idea further and expands it. My friend Maritza and her husband, Matt graciously modeled for me.

This painting, along with two other paintings, was created as part of a series on family, worship and praise for Living Springs Community Church in Glenwood, IL. The three works were created specifically for the church under the direction of Pastor Dave and Allen, the Director of Administration. Indiana artist Sharon Ruane created a number of works throughout the edifice previously.

This painting, “A Cord of Three Strands” and the other two works will be unveiled in an upcoming event at Living Springs Community Church on Sunday, January 17, 2010. I am scheduled to speak about the work at the 9:15 am service and the 10:30 am service.

This painting was especially wonderful for me to paint because it reminded me of my own family. Because of God, we were not easily broken. I am also reminded of those who supported me during this last year. Because of them, I was cared for and supported.

My family went through many challenges in 2009, but with God, prayer, family and many friends we are beginning 2010 with gratitude and appreciation.

Taking Action on Domestic Violence

One morning last week, Imani, my four year old, said, “Mommy, Thank you for fixing me oatmeal. Next time, can you give a little bacon or sausage.” I just melted. When I went grocery shopping, I picked up bacon AND sausage, just to make sure that she’d have some of each.

In the last post, I mentioned about my interest in empowering and caring for victims of domestic violence. I will expound on that. Not too long ago in my past, I was asking for the physical abuse to stop.

Yesterday, I watched the 20-20-Diane Sawyer interview of Rihanna with my 15 year -almost 16 - year old daughter Kayla. This interview really resonated with me since I have experienced abuse, both physically and verbally.

One night, my significant other at the time had a car fight - similar to the one Rihanna shares in the video. A plug of my hair was pulled out(I had braids at the time) - that was the fierceness of the fight. Kayla asked me what I thought about the interview and I was unable to even respond at the time.

In the fall of 1999, after attending “The Path” seminar with Frank Mallindar - I wrote out a vision statement of things I wanted to see happen in my life in the future. Frank - who has since moved on to writing books and hosting a radio program of significance - had helped me see that if I just maintained the status quo, nothing would change. Some of biggest challenges back then was that I was way broke, had low self-esteem and had been through a relationship that had cycles of abuse.

Ten years later, much about my situation has been transformed, yet it is taking me a long time to get beyond domestic issues. Though I still am challenged, God is turning my darkness into light. Through His help, I know I will continue to have a life of impact and meaning.

In my last post, I said I would share more about our, “We Care About Domestic Violence” drive and how you can get involved. My friend Cynthia and I are involved in a fundraiser/drive that we are loosely calling “We Care About Domestic Violence” or "We Care Hair Drive." We decided to focus primarily on hair care products(especially for women of color) because in a shelter/safe place situation women of color might have hair care needs that might not be addressed. Further, sometimes one's hair and appearance is the last thing one thinks about when trying to get through a domestic violence situation. Our new goal is 200 gift bags of hair care products for women who are supported by two domestic violence agencies in the Chicago-area.

For our “We Care” drive, we are asking for:

primarily hair care product - especially for women of color(preferred)
“pamper” stuff - fragrant lotions to make one feel good
lovely cosmetics - no foundation please

In John Maxwell’s book, “Be All You can Be,” he says the definition of success is “choosing to enter into the arena of action, determined to give your self to that cause which will better mankind for eternity.” He says further that “...to be all I can be, I need to help you be all you can be.” It is very empowering for me to help others and be a part of this “We Care” domestic violence drive for the second year in a row.

In addition to working on this drive, - I am yet working on a creative project for a local library. The mural I am creating is entitled, “Reading is a Family Affair.” Each component talks about an aspect of the library. I have included a picture photographed by BN Hoskins Photography - a watercolor - of a father reading to his little princess.

Despite what I've been through or maybe because of what I've been through, I choose to create...and I choose to help. You can help domestic violence victims feel special this holiday. Utilizing Art to Serve

My friend Cynthia called me last night with three words, “Let’s do it.” My first gut instinct was like, “girl we can’t...it’s too late...I’ve got too much on my plate already.” But then I thought about it being this time of month and this season and was like , “OK! Bring It!” as my friend Lisa likes to say.

What am I talking about?

A little background. October is/was domestic violence awareness month. This topic is near and dear to my heart. My daughter and I attended a vigil held for victims of domestic violence. It freaked me out to see the Illinois Silent Witness Exhibit - the memorial of so many beautiful people - gone just because someone could not control their anger.

To do something to make people more aware and to serve, last year Cynthia and I( and a whole lot of other folk in our network) donated hair care products and other feel good products for women associated with three domestic violence agencies including South Suburban Family Shelter. Our friends helped us raise over 100 treat bags of hair care products, makeup and etc.

So let’s do it. We are organizing another "We Care Drive" to support several domestic violence agencies. We are collecting hair care products, lotions, nail polish, makeup and other feel good items. More to come on this...

Speaking of artists giving back...my best bud Tina is starting a ministry which is from her heart to support women who’ve lost babies prematurely. Last year, Tina lost two babies prematurely - Isaac and Hannah Joy. This ministry will create baskets of love. From Tina, "The purpose of these baskets is to have resources available for a mother who has lost her child due to miscarriage, stillbirth, or early infant death. These resources would be centered on Christ & include the following; Bible, books on the loss of an infant from a christian perspective, a journal, framed artwork of Jesus with your baby, scripture cards, & more... I would need several different renditions of the Jesus/Infant picture for the different mothers who would be mourning. Such as a caucasian infant, hispanic, african-american, etc. As well as a picture of Jesus with twins."

These baskets will be distributed to hospitals and other centers free of charge. Tina has prayerfully asked funders, artists, publicists and other creative types to help her create these baskets and get the word out. Tina is expecting again and would like many baskets to share before she delivers in February. I encourage anyone who’d like to assist her to contact me.

In Jack Canfield’s book, The Success Principles, Principle 62 is ”Find a Way to Serve.” He says, “When you spend a lot of time serving with people who serve, you build up a network of generous, caring people who love to give and make a difference.” I wholeheartedly agree.

I have been working with another caring artist whose passion is to serve through her art. Algonquin, IL artist Marg Rehnberg of Compassion Art. shares her work in many forms including artblox. These artblox are used to raise money for worthy causes around the world including Compassion International. Through her work, she inspires other artists to use their art on these blox to support causes. It’s really neat to see.

Purpose: Using Creativity to Encourage and Connect

I just started reading The Success Principles by Jack Canfield - the co-creator of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series. In the second principle, Canfield expounds that one must be clear why one is here. After a few exercises, I’m sharing with you my reader my purpose. My purpose is to use my creativity and interpersonal skills to encourage, recognize and inspire others to joyfully express their God-given talents to help others and connect with them.

This week, I connected with some friends on Facebook asking them to name this painting. Based, on their comments, this painting is called “Higher Learning” also known as “Our Father.” Thanks to Shawanna and Chenetha who provided these name suggestions. I am in appreciation to everyone who commented.

This watercolor painting is 36x42 and is part of a “worship series” for Living Springs Community Church, a church 40 minutes south east of Chicago. After the church administration chose a theme, I created a series of photographs from models(Thanks Rance and Buddy). After creating some sketches, the administration chose one for me to work from.

Next step? I will complete a final painting in the series with the theme “praise.“ I’ll be looking for an African American woman model from Chicago to photograph with chin length curly hair who has a beautiful smile. Based on my original sketch, she might look a little like me. Any suggestions?

Vision Board and Affirmations 2010

Today is the day of new beginnings. I thought I'd share what I've been learning in the Blastoff class with Alyson Stanfield - with ArtBizCoach.com. I am learning to prioritize myself and my dreams in the past few days after a few weeks of nonstop creating, working and networking, etc. We are on day three of the class. In this post, I will share my new affirmations and my vision board. Having a vision and affirming it daily are the key to Life and Beyond Average Existence. Here is my vision board which includes a trip to Florence Italy with my daughter Kayla by October 2010...

..And a few of my affirmations:

*It is October 2010, my daughter Kayla and I just returned from Florence, Italy.
*I don’t buy what I don’t need.
*Money flows easily into my life, blesses me, and continues on to others.
*I talk less and listen more, allowing my actions to speak louder than words.
*I do one task at a time to completion.
*I learn about making money from wealthy people.
*I paint everyday and have 25 or more marketable oil, watercolors and pastels to prove it.
*It is June 2010 and I have reached my weight goal.
*It is December 2010, I have earned 53% more in profit than 2009 from my art.
*I can’t wait to share my artwork with new people
*I take good care of my money.

New Work Being Shown at Orland Park Library

In conjunction with my month-long exhibition, Orland Park Library’s Outreach Services is sponsoring a Meet the Artist night on Friday, September 4th, 2009 beginning at 7pm. In addition, I will present my talk, “Aging with Dignity and Compassion” on Tuesday, September 15th, 2009 beginning at 7pm.

Why?

For the last year, I have been grappling with the idea of aging and connecting that to my artwork. This new artistic direction came about when I started caring for my grandmother, Mandora Gibbs, in the summer of 2008. I hated the personal care and was somewhat embarrassed by it all...but I cherished singing hymns with her or having her ask for more strawberry jello or black walnut ice cream.

After painting grandmother several times, I focused my artistic energies on capturing fleeting moments with her. I had no idea she’d leave us this past February.

Fleeting. Changing. Temporal. I found that with my experience with grandma. I also found that same experience in my recent trip to Saugatuck, MI at Oxbow. The sun was there and then it wasn’t. Shadows moved across the space with the clouds. I had to paint, design and carve out negative spaces that moved.

Mmm! Ox-Bow, school of art and artists’ residency. Good views. Yummy food. Soulful people.

Oxbow is in Saugatuck, MI and is affiliated with the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. It has served as a retreat for visual artists since 1910. This past week, I took a drawing/painting class with New York artist, Jimmy Wright. He pushed me and challenged me in significant ways - allowing me to create some paintings that are precious to me.

From my journal: No fear. That's what I say. Fagettabout it. It's Wednesday. I'm enjoying myself immensely. Finally a compliment from Jimmy Wright. So glad. I don't know him, but his eyes are flavorful. I'm up. Showered and dressed. Hair washed. Clean. I'm happy. Released. I'm blessed, so blessed. I can support myself. Breath. Breathing is good. Salads. Don't freakin' overeat already. OK. Arr. The only black woman here...

Here are some views of Oxbow and my first painting. Well not exactly - I had actually spent a day painting a still life of peaches which Jimmy abhorred. The next day he said, "No more peaches." He suggested I get out into the land. So this is actually my first finished landscape painting using the techniques he taught us.

Five More Reasons for Saugatuck

One more week until Saugatuck. My supplies for my Saugatuck Michigan trip arrived this week. One shipment came early in the morning via Fedex and one shipment came this afternoon from UPS. I'm so excited. I allowed Kayla my 15 year old to open my packages so she could share in the excitement and pop the bubble wrap - something she likes to do. Watercolor paper...12 bottles of Dr. Ph. Martins India ink...Rembrandt and Sennelier pastels. These are like a scapel in a surgeons hands, a ball in an athletes hands - tools of my trade. These supplies bring me closer to my Michigan painting trip and also closer to getting more paint stains on my hands. The paint stains mean I'm working. I've concluded that there are five more reasons to keep painting (and to take this trip):

5) I get to learn, practice and make mistakes - just like in kindergarten.

4) My girls (Kayla and Imani) get to see me living my dream and thereby will more easily live theirs as well.

3) God gave me a gift and I get to honor him by using it.

2) I also honor the memory of Suzie James - my ancestor who was a slave - by pursuing creativity which flows through my family's genes.

and lastly, drum roll please...the my top reason for the continued pursuit of this is:

1) I can paint in the Haas painting studio at 12:56 AM in my pajamas, with rollers in my hair and gospel music in the background. Life IS Good.

My latest creation - Apples for Lauren - an oil portrait commission for Mia is in this post. I started this many weeks ago, but got stumped on one of the faces. After much prayer and practice, I finished it.

I'm Going on an Adventure

In two weeks, I am headed to Saugatuck Michigan for a week to paint. No kids. No computer. Just lots of painting supplies, nature and Mr. Jimmy Wright - my painting instructor. I'm so excited. More to come about this adventure. I am learning five things I must do to make this adventure happen. I share them now:

1. Minimize negatives from people(even family) who are downers(why are you going?, what about the economy? and etc.)
2. Save, save, save and stretch my dollar(I don't need every single article of the supply list).
3. Finish my work(I have two commission projects due NOW. I'd feel great if one was completely done before I left).
4. Stay open to the beautiful. Enough said.
5. Make sure my girls - Kayla and Imani - are happy and comfortable with their plans for the week. (This should have been listed first.)

New Painting: "Soulful Gaze"

Wow! I can't believe its been TWO months since I posted. I have been painting, teaching and learning. Many of my students like to see my demonstrations in my workshops, so I am posting pictures of a painting's progress. The painting, "Strawberry Eyes" is for my friend Mia and it is of her grandson. I really like this watercolor piece because I had a chance to develop it slowly and spend time with each layer. Why rush, right? I also purchased strawberries to practice painting so I could get it just right. Yummy! Well, here are the results of taking my time. Thank you to everyone for your liberal comments. I love those.

Out and Around Southland Chicago

I'm sharing some pictures of recent shows and happenings. During the month of February, I was out and about in the Chicago Southland area. In addition to Calumet City, I was blessed to be at Tinley Park High School and Country Club Hills for African American History Month Programs. Thanks to Vikkey Perez(TPH) and to Joann Wade(CCH) for facilitating these events.

Here, I am pictured with another Antonia. Yes, that is my new best bud and name sake Antonia. We met at the Country Club Hills, IL African American History Month Program. We are standing in front of some of my artwork.

Here I am with Earline Hayden who is a staff member of the Village of Country Club Hills. She was really helpful to me at the show.

Here, I am with Mommy at a presentation for the Senior Services Center of Will County. I presented "Aging with Dignity and Compassion" - paintings inspired by my grandmother. It was a bittersweet time - we held grandmother's funeral two days prior....A big Thank You goes to Wilma Hopkins for facilitating this event and for the invitation to share my work.

Praising God for Provision

The sun has been out, spring is coming and I'm praising God for his provision. So many good things have happened so far this year. Here are a few:

**Two of my paintings have been accepted into Women's Works 2009, a juried art show sponsored by the Northwest Area Arts Council in Illinois. I am thankful to art coach Janet Bloch who told me about the show. One of the paintings is shown here - "Hot Pink Earmold."

**I was awarded an "ootra Girl" scholarship through the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Thank you to Debbie Jagel and the entire "ootra Girl" Family.

**I participated in a well-attended African American Heritage Celebration, February 7th in Calumet City. Thanks goes to my sister Teece for helping me set up my vendor booth and keeping me company all day. Thanks to Mayor Michelle and Val Williams for an inspiring day.

**Even in this economy, I delivered one painting and finished another commission. It's God's economy ya'll!

Remember the scriptures - Proverbs 14:23 - All hard work brings a profit AND Philippians 4:19 - But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

I am praising Him for His provision.

Putting One's Faith in Action

This week, I watched a TD Jakes video entitled Put Your Faith in Action. It inspired me to not let my dreams die. In the message, TD Jakes said faith works if you work it. This week I worked it.

I painted more. I added exercise to my daily routine. And I simply prayed. Praying is always an example of putting one's faith in action. It takes faith to be close to God...faith to believe.

This watercolor painting - "Sleeping in Safety" describes what I want for myself, my daughter and women everywhere - to experience love and safety. The swirls and waves came to me like a rush. I painted them first on watercolor paper. Then my daughter allowed me to draw her which I did. That pastel/charcoal drawing was then added on top of the watercolor. Voila!

Faith to Continue the Course

I can stay the course. I can alter the destination slightly. And no - I do not need an MBA to do it. What I need is a good paint brush, some arches water color paper, a vision and "Mary, Mary" in the background. I'm an artist and artist's create. With a faithful decision:

1. I can further my education - the goal is artistic mastery.

2. I can choose to embark on an educational path that is perfect for me - fine art.
3. Jan, 1, 2009 is the beginning of the rest of my life.
4. I take full responsibility for the changes I want to see.

In this post, I am including one of the images I loved creating in 2008. I created it for my friend Tina who had just lost her baby Hannah to miscarriage. It's called "Release for Tina" and was created with watercolor. It was a joy to know that this work helped someone else get through a tough situation.

I have faith to continue the course and practice resiliency. I am most grateful to be able to create, for my supplies and for people to share my work with.

Course Change

Transformation=change or alteration.

I have been taught that a straight line can dramatically change its destination by a slight alteration at its beginning. A slight change over time can create a ripple effect. Mahatma Gandhi said, "You must be the change you want to see in the world." Hence, if there are any changes I want to see, I must change course.

This week, I am beginning my first course change. My first course change is to pursue
an advanced education in design and business. The school - IIT Stuart School of Business. The first hurdle - the GMAT( Graduate Management Admission Test). The goal - score 600 or better on the exam. The procedure - an online study course to study for the exam.

For the next several weeks, I am studying for this exam. I will take this test at the end of November.

I have decided:

1) I can further my education and face my fears(math agh!)
2) I can embark on a educational path different from strictly fine art
3) Today is the beginning of the rest of my life.
4) Accept my responsibility for the change I want to see.
